Asian Americans continue to face significant language barriers in accessing quality healthcare services. According to 2000 Census, about 22% of Asian American adults who speak an Asian language find it difficult to understand English or do not understand English at all. Among these, 51% are seniors 65 and older, who may have plenty of medical issues or symptoms. Contrary to the model minority myth, many Asian Americans also continue to struggle with economic and educational challenges, which usually prevent them from seeking or receiving basic health services. These problems are often exacerbated by lack of culturally and linguistically appropriate materials at medical settings.
AAHI is committed to addressing the health care needs of the Asian Americans. As a part of this effort, AAHI continues to develop and disseminate education materials that are culturally and linguistically tailored to the needs of diverse Asian American communities. Currently, AAHI has made available brochures, posters and bookmarks on various diseases affecting Asian Americans. In addition, AAHI offers a comprehensive medical guide for limited English proficient patients. The following are the multi-lingual publications developed by AAHI:
